Deadly Blokes and Kids focuses on building strong relations between male caregivers and their children. It is an innovative program which uses music to engage participants and create a space for men to interact with children in a positive, safe and creative environment.
Local musicians and respected family men act as mentors and role models as they guide the groups' activities, which include discussions about family issues, learning music skills and producing songs around the themes of strong, healthy families and supporting children.
"That's what we want to bring back to the community in all this - it's about the bloke and kids, and reminding them and helping them realise they are family and they are special to each other and restoring that faith and respect towards each other." - Peter Brandy, singer/song writer and key facilitator of Deadly Blokes and KidsSave the Children Update (Oct 2010)
Pakistan Floods Appeal
Up to 20 million people have been affected by the Pakistan Floods. Save the Children has reached over 840,000 people through emergency medical aid, and distribution of shelter, hygiene kits and supplies. Priorities at the moment for children and their families are food, clean drinking water and health care.
Workplace Giving
We would like to thank our staff for their participation in our Save the Children Workplace Giving program. With research showing that over half of businesses only have a 10% giving participation rate, 46% of our staff (many of whom are students and artists) donate a percentage of every shift to the Deadly Blokes & Kids program. We're very proud.
Deadly Blokes & Kids Staff Kununurra Visit
A Save the Children Report
“When it comes to live music, there are few venues as iconic and well-loved as the Palais Theatre. So it seems fitting that the management team are putting their passion and knowledge of all things musical to good use, by strengthening family relationships and helping stage an event in an outback indigenous community.
On 22 August, Palais Theatre Management arrranged for Events Manager, Aimee Chapman, to travel to Kununurra, WA to act as a musical mentor as part of Save the Children’s Deadly Blokes & Kids program. The program helps build positive relationships between fathers or male caregivers and their children, through the shared creation of music. Aimee spent a week in the East Kimberley town teaching program participants how to use Pro Tools, a digital audio music program, which will enable them to craft musical backing tracks and record and edit their own music. Aimee led music workshops with the kids, and helped them use their new skills to record a song they’ve written called 'I’ve Bin Dreamin’'. The week of musical collaboration culminated in a Deadly Blokes & Kids performance at the Kimberley Croc Fest family event in Kununurra, where the team performed their song live with Aimee.
Palais Theatre Management and their patrons are making a real difference to the lives of families in Kununurra. Thank you for your support!”
